Silicone resists standing water in a way that acrylic coatings simply don't. Acrylic coatings can soften or lose adhesion under prolonged ponding, while silicone maintains its waterproofing membrane properties even in areas that hold water for extended periods after a rain event. On a roof with real ponding, using anything other than silicone is setting up an early failure in exactly the areas that need protection most.
That said, silicone isn't automatically the right coating for every roof. On a well-draining roof with no ponding history, a lower-cost acrylic coating may perform just as well for less money, and a contractor who defaults to silicone on every job regardless of drainage conditions may not be matching the product to the actual roof.
Coating performance depends heavily on dry film thickness, measured in mils, and this is the single most common detail missing from coating bids. Coating over wet insulation traps moisture inside the roof assembly permanently, since the coating seals the surface and prevents the trapped water from drying out or evaporating. A proper coating project starts with a moisture scan, either infrared or a core-cut survey, to identify wet areas before any coating goes down.
